Understanding the mental and physical powerlessness over alcohol is the foundation upon which a happy and sober recovery is built. Blaming people, places and things for our alcoholism is wrong; we must accept our personal powerlessness which comes in two parts. The mental obsession with, and for, alcohol, believing that we can moderate our alcohol intake and the allergic physical reaction we have for alcohol; an abnormal reaction which means once we consume alcohol in any form we crave more and more. Alcoholism cannot be solved by willpower or self will. If it could alcoholics would be able to stop on their power alone. That very lack of our own power keeps us drinking.
